When you run a sale, you usually don’t want your active discount codes stacking on top of the already-reduced prices. A customer with a code lands on your sale, applies it, and pays less than you ever intended. Most stores either turn every code off by hand and hope they remember to switch them back on afterwards, or quietly wear the margin.

What we did

We built Cycliq a clean switch for it, a way to stop discount codes stacking while a sale is on, that they flip on and off as a sale starts and ends, instead of disabling codes one at a time. We rolled it out the way we roll out anything that touches checkout, on one market first so we could watch it, then the others, so nothing surprised a live cart.

The result

Cycliq can run a sale without giving away margin they didn’t mean to, and without the fiddly manual dance of disabling and re-enabling codes around every promotion. The control is theirs, and it comes down to one switch.

What to take from it

Sales and discount codes fight each other more than people realise. If you run promotions and also hand out codes, it is worth checking what actually happens when a customer brings both to the same cart. The answer is often that they pay less than you planned, and it stays invisible until you go looking for it.
