The hidden Shopify product that leaked through a collection

A client keeps one of their products off the shop on purpose. It exists to be bought through a single page at its own price, so it sits in no collection, appears in no menu, and to anyone browsing it should not exist. During a round of work on their product page we noticed it sitting in plain sight in the shop, price and all.

What we found

Nobody had unhidden anything. A navigation tab pointed at the store’s catch-all collection, the automatic one Shopify maintains at the all address, and that collection has one rule. It lists every product published to the online store, whether or not you have put it in any collection of your own. Keeping a product out of your menus and your curated collections does not keep it out of that one. The product was published, because it had to be purchasable through its page, so the catch-all listed it.

The fix took a minute, pointing the tab at the curated collection that holds what the client actually wants browsed. The useful part was the audit that followed, checking search, sitemaps and recommendation surfaces for the same product, so we knew the one leak was the only leak.

What to take from it

On Shopify, hidden is not one switch, it is a handful of separate surfaces. A product can be absent from your menus and still reachable through the catch-all collection, storefront search, the sitemap, or a recommendations block, because each of those decides independently what to show. If your store has products that are meant to be invisible, exclusive drops, bundle components, wholesale-only items, it is worth listing every surface and checking each one, starting with the collection almost every theme links to somewhere.
